Only a day short of their commencement of pre-election campaign, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday announced a seven-member selection committee to finalise the names of the candidates for the forthcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.

While the DUSU elections will be held on September 12 and still have three weeks to go, student organisations are gearing up for this. According to Saket Bahuguna, State secretary of ABVP, the seven-member team will trim the 14 shortlisted candidates to seven or eight. “These seven or eight candidates will then do the pre-election campaigning,” he said.

The team comprises ABVP’s State president Manu Kataria, national secretary Rohit Chahal, organising State secretary Ajay Thakur, State vice-president Bhupender Gothwal, zonal in-charge Rajneesh Jindal, DUSU president Aman Awana and Bahuguna himself. Chahal informed, “In Round 1, the committee will finalise nine names of candidates for DUSU elections. In Round 2, it will finally select four candidates.”

The ABVP pre-elections campaign under which possible candidates will be divided into four groups will campaign in several colleges of Delhi University Tuesday onwards, said Bahuguna.

Chahal added that issues of FYUP, girl safety in colleges will be of primary importance. “Besides, we will also tell students that the Congress-led Government didn’t open any new college in the last 17 years leading to over-admissions in most colleges,” he said. As per elections schedule, September 3 is the last date for filing of nomination papers while candidates can withdraw their names till September 5. “After September 5 we will know the name of the four candidates fighting the election from ABVP,” Bahuguna informed.
