A 62-year-old Tanzanian woman was robbed off her bag containing $6,000  and passports of her family members while she, along with her family were heading back to their hotel in Central Delhi’s Karol Bagh area.

The woman was accosted by two bike-borne men who snatched her bag as she neared the hotel. The incident took place on the same night when a 19-year-old German national was robbed off his belongings by a rickshaw puller and his accomplice in North Delhi’s Kotwali area on April 7.

living in the national capital for the past one month, Fatima Heri had come to Delhi to get her one-and-a-half -year-old grandson treated for an infection at the BlK Hospital.

“Robbed of all the cash and our passports, we are barely surviving on $50 we had kept tucked in our luggage. Since my son is admitted in a private hospital and we are living in a hotel, we are finding it difficult to sustain ourselves,” said Zebun Begum, daughter of Fatima.

“On April 7, at around 10:30 pm, we were heading back to our hotel on Saraswati Marg in Karol Bagh after eating at a Subway outlet. At the time of the incident, my mother  was walking with my husband, Aarif and me,” said Zebun Begum.

She said, “When we reached China Town Hotel, two bike-borne men came from behind and snatched my mother’s purse containing $6,000, 3000 Tanzanian shillings, passports, mobile phones, one gold chain and pendant plus Rs 3000.”

Police said that as per the complaint they all had come to Delhi to get their child treated. On the doctors suggestion, the Tanzanian family had deferred their plans to go back home.

A senior police officer said, “A case has been filed under Section 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person), 379 (punishment for theft) and 35 (when such an act is criminal by reason of its being done with a criminal knowledge or intention) of the Indian Penal Code at the Karol Bagh police station against unknown persons.”

Meanwhile, the police said that they have recovered the CCTV footage from the area, however, they are not able to establish the registration number of the motorcycle as it is not visible in the CCTV grab. Fatima had sustained minor injuries during the incident and was taken to the lady Hardinge Hospital from where she was discharged after first-aid, added the police.
