60 portable traffic lights for Gurugram

The Gurugram Traffic Police has come up with an innovative idea to tackle complicated traffic congestions by installing 60 portable traffic signals that will be moved from one place to another whenever needed to tackle traffic bottlenecks in the city.

The traffic cops are implementing this after several experiments with the portable signals proved to be highly successful.

The equipment consists of a four-metre-high traffic signal with four panels for all sides of the junction. It can be dismantled to a height of one metre for transportation.

The traffic police will deploy these signals at different locations during peak hours to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

“We have identified some busy points in the city. Especially the old Gurugram Roads needs such types of systems. Congested roads and encroachments are some of the biggest challenges that Gurugram roads face,” Sibash Kabiraj, Deputy Inspector General, Highways and Joint Commissioner, Gurugram Police, said.

The signals would be located at Delhi-Gurugram Road, Sohna Chowk, Kabir Bhawan, Sector 9-4 Chowk, Palam Vihar Chowk, Sector-12 Chowk, Near Sheetla Mata Mandir, CRPF Camp Chowk.

The portable signals will primarily run using a rechargeable battery. The system can continuously operate for 10 hours.

The signal timing in each direction can be pre-set or manually changed by traffic personnel at the junction.

The system will be used in case of breakdowns or power failures or wherever immediate traffic diversions are required.

“If there is traffic signal the commuters will not jump or break the traffic rules. So the portable signals will surely help for smooth flow of traffic in Gurugram,” Kabiraj said.
