A day before the festival of celebrating the goddesses of Navratri was to commence, a six-day-old baby girl was found abandoned near a garbage dump near the GD Goenka School in Northwest Delhi’s Model Town area on Monday morning.
DCP Milind Dumbere (Northwest) said, “The incident came to light on Monday morning when a woman, working as a cleaner in the school found the baby girl crying in the garbage dump.”.
A senior police officer said, “The little girl, aged around six to seven days was found wrapped in a blanket. The woman informed the local police after which our team rushed the child to the Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital where doctors are taking care of her. The baby girl has suffered mosquito bites yet her condition is considered to be stable. She is admitted at the NICU ward of the hospital.”
“We have registered a case under Section 317 (Exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code at the Model Town police station against unknown persons,” said the DCP.
A team from the Model Town police station, including a woman constable, is taking care of the baby girl. In the meantime, we have informed about the matter to the Child Welfare Committee.
“Our team is making efforts to ascertain how the baby girl was left behind at the garbage dump in the night. We are questioning the locals to establish how the child reached there. Efforts are on to nab the parents of the child.”
