A 58-year-old woman became the latest victim of the ‘Zeher Khurani” gang, notorious for their modus operandi, at a Government hospital in the heart of the national Capital. Senior police officers confirmed that a case of theft have been registered at the North Avenue police station on the complaint of the elderly woman, who was targeted by the gang after she found her valuables — including cash and jewellery missing after she was asked to consume a sedative laced medicine by a man, who posed himself to be known to her family.

Sources said that it is the first time that the Zeher Khurani gang had struck at the area under the jurisdiction of lutyen’s Delhi.

As per the complaint filed by the elderly woman at the North Avenue police station in New Delhi district, Rekha Rani, a resident of Budh Vihar in Outer Delhi came to the Ram Manhohar lohia hospital on Tuesday morning for check up. Waiting outside the OPD, she was standing outside counter no 13 at the hospital reception. A middle aged with a strong physique approached the elderly lady and introduced himself to e an acquaintance of the family of the woman.

He persisted that he is well connected with the doctors at the Government hospital and can easily get an appointment with a doctor for the old woman. Initially, the woman was reluctant.

However, when the man went inside the OPD, he returned and gave her a sedative laced medicine and convinced her that it is prescribed by the doctor. Trusting that man, Rekha Rani consumed the medicine. She started feeling dizzy and sat on a bench inside the hospital complex.

After a few hours, when the elderly woman gained consciousness, she found that her jewellery and the cash she was carrying with her has been stolen. She informed her family after which she informed the police and registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at the North Avenue police station.

Police said that they have started investigation and are scanning the CCTV camera footage to ascertain the identity of the man.

Police said that in the preliminary investigation, the theft appears to be  a work of the Zeher Khurani gang. The gang is famous for enticing the victim by offering them food laced with sedatives. When the person loses consciousness, they make away with the valuables of the victim.

Police said that it is the first time that the Zeher Khurani gang has struck in the heart of the national capital, especially in the area surrounding lutyen’s Delhi.
