A five-year-old boy died of injuries caused by firecrackers burst on Diwali on Wednesday night in  Swarupnagar area of northeast Delhi, doctors said on Thursday.

According to the authorities, the boy died of injuries caused by glass pieces that pierced his body while he was watching some boys of his colony burst a cracker in a glass tumbler.

Delhi saw over 500 cases of Diwali-related burn injuries this year.

Doctors in five Government hospitals —Safdarjung, Ram Manohar lohia (RMl), Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB), Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU), and lok Nayak (lN) — said this year, the incidents of burn injuries during Diwali celebrations came down in comparison to last years.

In the past 24 hours, RMl hospital received about 100 Diwali-related burn cases. “Only three patients with 30 per cent burn injuries are still in the burns ward and are being treated while other patients with minor injuries were given the first-aid and allowed to go home,” said Dr V K Sinha, RMl spokesperson.

“This year, fewer burn cases were reported. last year, we reported over 225 burn cases on Diwali. However, this time people are aware of the ill effects of bursting firecrackers,” said Sinha.

The situation was similar at Safdarjung, GTB, DDU hospitals too. Dr Karoon Agrawal, head of the Burns and Plastic Surgery department at Safdarjung hospital said in the past 24 hours, we have reported 150 burn cases and none of them with major burns.

Dr. Savita Babbar, the medical superintendent of DDU hospital, said there was a decrease in number of cases. She said in the past 24 hours only 160 cases were received without any serious injuries. Usually, we used to receive more than 250 cases on Diwali every year, she said.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital spokesperson Dr Ajoy Shegal said the burn cases on Diwali have marginally declined on this festive season. “Our hospital has received about 180 burn cases in the past 24 hours without any serious case till now,” said the doctor.
