As many as 464 cases of rape of minors have been recorded by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) in the last six months. While the highest 136 cases have been recorded in Outer district, DCW, on an average, receives at least two rape cases against minors every day. While most of the cases have reached the court, officials in the commission say that the crime rate against women is growing at an alarming rate.

According to the data given by the DCW, Central district recorded 40 minor rape cases, 66 cases in East Delhi, two cases in New Delhi, 79 cases in North-East district and 35 cases in North-West, 46 in South-East, 44 cases in South-West, 59 cases in South district and 43 cases in West Delhi.

A seven-year-old girl was on Sunday raped by a 22-year-old man in Ghazipur. DCW chief Swati Maliwal said, “The victim was brutally assaulted, she bled profusely. Delhi is shamelessly rape capital of the world. Even DCW’s request for improving women safety is falling on deaf ears. We appeal to the Centre and State to work together to save women and girls from rape.” The Outer district recorded the maximum number of rape cases in the last six months. In June, 15 minor rape cases were recorded while 24 cases were recorded in May, 25 cases in April, 15 in March, February and January recorded 16 cases each while in December, the number of rape cases was 20.

A week ago, a 14-year-old Dalit girl was brutally raped in East Delhi’s Burari area in which the DCW had issued a notice to police for not arresting the accused. “We visited the 14-year-old Dait girl who was battling for life in Delhi and eventually died on July 26. While she was suffering, her perpetrators were roaming free. The girl was raped several times, fed corrosives destroying her organs. DCW got her shifted to private hospital too,” the DCW chief had said.

Two months ago, a 13-year-old girl was raped and dumped near railway tracks allegedly by a teenager who lives in her neighbourhood in Pul Pehladpur area. The DCW said that the victim was deaf and dumb and was found in an unconscious state near the railway tracks. The minor girl — who was an orphan and mentally challenged — was admitted in AIIMS. “The girl was found in an unconscious state near railway area. We ensured proper treatment for the victim in AIIMS and safety for the family members,” said a DCW official.

In March, a four-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a 30-year-old man in Outer Delhi’s Shahabad Dairy area.
