A massive drive to decongest Vikas Marg was carried out on Saturday late evening jointly by East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and Delhi Traffic Police, revenue department, and public health department.
Vehicles illegally parked on footpaths of Vikas Marg were seized by EDMC challans on site were also issued by the Traffic Police. Teams seized 46 illegally parked on the pavement of Vikas Marg.
“The efforts have been taken to decongest Vikas marg and to make it commuter friendly by removing illegal encroachments. Usually encroachments in this area are in the form of illegal structures on the road, stranded vehicles and putting articles on the footpaths. We have initiated measures to control these menace, said an EDMC official.
“Market Associations and Resident welfare Associations were also requested to cooperate in order to change the areas in to a model one. Over the years, residential buildings on this stretch have been turned into shops and showrooms. This has led to scores of vehicles being parked in the narrow service lanes next to the shops and the road. Of the total stretch, approximately 4km falls under the EDMC’s jurisdiction. While we want to focus on developing the entire road, our priority is the stretch from laxmi Nagar to Karkari More, which faces regular traffic snarls,” said an EDMC official.
The official said that due to encroachment, commuters were getting harassed especially females and children were forced to walk on the main road often resulting in mishaps. The East District Administration took up this issue seriously and decided to remove the encroachments and free the footpaths of Vikas Marg.
Sources said the corporation plans to tackle illegal parking, encroachment on roads, lack of footpaths and the disposal of garbage in the area urgently.”We will develop footpaths where ever necessary and maintain the existing ones with immediate effect. Also, we will develop the central verge along the route and carry out an extensive plantation drive in coordination with the PWD. To tackle illegal
parking, we will hold drives with the help of the traffic police,” said an EDMC offical.
