The Delhi Police on Sunday arrested a 40-year-old woman believed to be kingpin of a gang allegedly involved in running a racket of selling children to childless couples ranging between Rs 2 lakh and  Rs 5 lakhs.

According to senior police official, the woman identified as Kavita, is suspected to be the kingpin of the racket selling babies to childless couples at prices ranging between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh.

“The accused was held three days ago and a court has sent her to police remand. We have also recovered two babies from her possession after her arrest,” said the senior police official.

The racket came to the notice of Delhi Police last month after the arrest of one the gang member. “Two police personnel met one of the accused posing as a childless couple. The accused was arrested and four children were rescued from him,” said a police official.

“One of the four children died at the hospital later. It was later revealed that the baby belonged to a minor girl who had become pregnant after being allegedly raped in outer Delhi,” said the police official.

“More arrests were made but Kavita was on the run. She was finally arrested after she came to her house in south Delhi,” added the police official.
