4 men held for nicking Rly parcel enclosing Rs 50 lakh cash

Delhi Police Crime Branch on Friday claimed to have arrested four persons, including two police constables and a railway contractor, on charges of spiriting away a delivery boy with a parcel containing Rs 50 lakh from Central Delhi.

Identified as Raj Bahadur, alias Raju (Delhi Police constable), Surender Kumar Verma (Haryana Police constable), Sanjay, alias Dharamvir and Vasudev Prasad Rai (Railways contractor) were arrested on Thursday by a Special Unit of the Crime Branch. Three of their associates involved in the crime are still at large.

“We have recovered Rs 12 lakh in cash and household goods valued over Rs 1.5 lakh. This apart, a Toyota Corolla, WagonR and four cell phones used in the commission of the crime too have been seized,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

Oddly enough while the victim claims there was Rs 50 lakh in the parcel, the ones arrested claim it enclosed only Rs 43 lakh. Another baffling question is how such a huge amount of cash found its way in a Railways parcel.

On April 22, Rishi Chand, who worked for a cargo firm of Allahabad, approached police and reported that on April 13 he collected a parcel from New Delhi Railway Station, which was sent from Allahabad via the Prayagraj Express. The parcel held cartons of mobile phones and cash of Rs 50 lakh. “When he was taking the parcel in a rickshaw towards Pahar Ganj, he was intercepted by 4-5 men, two of whom were in uniform. He was forcibly taken to Faridabad in a black car, divested off his parcel and dumped in Surajkund,” said Yadav. Chand was threatened with dire consequences if he ratted them out. This rattled him no end. But he finally approached the authorities to report the matter.

During investigation, specific information was received that three persons Surender, Sanjay and Vasudev Rai, who were involved in the crime, would come to Seble Cinema in Badarpur. A trap was laid and at about 2 pm, the trio, who had come in a black Toyota Corolla, was apprehended. During a search, Rs 5.25 lakh from Surender, Rs 2.55 lakh from Sanjay and Rs 2.80 lakh cash from Vasudev was recovered.
