Four labourers were buried alive after rice burlap sacks fell on them in their sleep in Outer Delhi’s Alipur area on Friday morning.

Police received information at 9.40 am about the death of four labourers in JR India limited Hamidpur, near Jai Hanuman Dharam Kanta. The dead have been identified as lattun Yadav (23), Pawan Yadav (37), Manoj (22) and Santosh (24). They hailed from Nawa Pokhan, Samastipur in Bihar and worked as labourers at a rice mill owned by businessman Deepak Jain. All of them went to sleep around midnight in the passageway between the stored rice gunnysacks.

Police officials revealed that another employee at the godown — identified as Ashok Yadav — too was in the silo, asleep 50 metres from his associates. Yadav woke up in the morning to find 50 rice sacks weighing 50 kilos apiece strewn around. He removed the bags and saw the four men lying motionless. The men were rushed to a hospital closeby where they were pronounced dead on arrival. “A case under Section 304 A, causing death by negligence, has been registered at Alipur PS,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikramjit Singh.
