New Delhi district police has arrested four people after a brief encounter outside the Shivaji Stadium on late Wednesday night. Refusing to pay for the cigarettes, a group of men had got into a heated argument with a road side vendor, which further led to a quarrel.
To contain the issue, a police team from Connaught Place reached the spot and asked the accused to surrender. Denying to do so, they had opened fire on police. In response police also fired and within one hour, the team caught hold of the 4 men while the 2 managed to escape.
“The accused were returning to Uttam Nagar after having dinner at a restaurant in CP in their Ertiga car. They got down outside a kiosk near the Shivaji stadium bus terminal to get cigarettes. When the owner of the kiosk asked for money, one of the six men brandished a pistol and pointed the butt towards the man. A man standing at the kiosk quickly ran towards the police picket,” said a senior police officer.
BK Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) said, “We have arrested four people after a brief encounter. The arrested accused has been identified as Aman Bhatia (25), Punit Bhatia (25), Sahil Verma (25) and Kamal (23)."
Police said that the incident took place at around 11 pm when a passerby informed one of the inspectors about a quarrel outside Shivaji stadium.
A team led by SHO Pankaj Malik reached the place and found that Aman Bhatia, who was recently released from Jail in a murder case, was pointing his country made pistol to the kiosk owner.
