Another man has been arrested in the Capital for allegedly pronouncing ‘Triple Talaq’ to his wife. Police said that the incident was reported from central Delhi’s Kamla Market area on Friday.

According to a senior police official, the accused identified as Tosif (38), a resident of Gali Razia Begum in the Chawri Bazaar area has been arrested.

The victim, Asma, in her complaint alleged that she was given triple talaq at Mohalla Nihariyan at GB Road by her husband Tosif on August 9 when she went to his office to get some money for their children.

“My husband beat me up as I went to my husband’s office to get some money for our children. He refused to give me money, and physically assaulted me and pronounced triple talaq,” she stated in her complaint adding that her husband also threatened to kill her.

“A case was filed at Kamla Nagar police station and Tosif has been arrested under the Muslim Women (Protection of rights on Marriage) Act,” said the police official.

This is the second case reported in Delhi after President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, which criminalises instant triple talaq among Muslims and attracts a jail term of three years for the husband.

Earlier on Saturday, a 38-year-old man was arrested in north Delhi’s Azad market area after his wife alleged that he divorced her through triple talaq after more than six years of marriage due to non-fulfillment of the demand of dowry in June this year.
