Police have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly killing a woman brutally in South-East Delhi's Amar Colony area.
The accused, Mohd Sufiyan, was in a relationship with the victim's friend and used to come to the woman's residence for an overnight stay in order to spend time with her. They all became friends at a club in Vasant Vihar a year ago.
Whenever Sufiyan would come to the deceased's house to meet his girlfriend, the woman had to stay somewhere else which irked her and they had a fallout.
Sufiyan was forced to look for other costly accommodations to spend time with his girlfriend, with whom he had an extra-marital affair, police said.
On March 27, the body of Pooja (30) was found at her Amar Colony residence with wounds on her neck and wrist. The woman had been killed on March 24 but it was on March 27 that her body was discovered.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Romil Baaniya, it was a blind case for them.
The CCTV footage from 12 cameras was scanned and a man, who is not a local of the area, was identified. But since he had come in a cycle rickshaw, his face was covered by the hood of the rickshaw.
Basis the CCTV footage, police managed to chart down the route taken by the accused after killing the woman and they recovered the blood-stained clothes of the accused from Sarai Kale Khan.
Sufiyan was questioned in connection with the case. He grew cautious that the police was on his trail.
On Sunday, while he was trying to escape with his girlfriend, he was arrested from near Kalkaji Temple. On questioning, he confessed to killing Pooja.
Sufiyan, already in heavy debt due to his luxurious lifestyle, got to know that the deceased used to keep jewellery and cash at home and planned to steal them after killing her.
The accused had also lent Rs 35,000 to Pooja when they were friends, but she refused to return the amount.
“He came to her house on March 24 on the pretext of resolving issues but instead slit her throat, smothered her and slit her wrist too,” said DCP Baaniya
He then ransacked her house and stole jewellery and money in order to mislead police into believing that robbery was the motive behind Pooja's death but law caught up with him, he added.
