Over three thousand motorists were prosecuted on Wednesday for infringing the right of pedestrians to safely cross the road on the first day of Delhi Traffic Police’s drive.
The Delhi Traffic Police prosecuted around 3,100 vehicles for overshooting the stop line at zebra crossings that thereby infringing the right of pedestrians to cross the road safely.
According to Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander, pedestrians constitute about 46 per cent of the total road fatalities in Delhi, making them the most vulnerable to traffic accidents.
“One of the reasons for such accidents is that generally motorists do not give way to pedestrians on zebra crossing,” Chander said.
In order to inculcate the habit of giving way to pedestrians, Delhi Traffic Police had decided to enforce the right of way of pedestrians at zebra crossings strictly from July 1 where violators will be prosecuted with a fine of Rs100 for the first offence, and Rs300 for every subsequent violation.
“Road owning agencies have been requested to provide zebra crossing and warning signs wherever required. In the interest of pedestrian safety, all motorists are requested to give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings and stop before ‘Stop line’,” Chander said, adding that traffic police will continue this drive all over Delhi vigorously.
