The Gurugram administration’s ambitious plan to have eight portable cabins placed across the city for the homeless has been set in motion.
Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has placed three portable cabins at Rajiv chowk, IFFCO
chowk and Gurugram railway station.
Meanwhile, the MCG has already opened two permanent shelters at Village Kanhai and Bhim Nagar. Third permanent night shelter at Sheetla Mata Mandir, with two rooms only for women, has also been opened.
“We will place five more portable cabins in the next week. All the five cabins have already been prepared. I have given instructions to the MCG officials to put in their sincere efforts to save the homeless from suffering in winters,” said Tl Satyaprakash, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gurugram.
The eight portable cabins will be placed across the city at Rajiv Chowk, Basai Chowk, Khandsa Chows, Iffco Chowk, Shankar Chowk, Khandsa Chowk, Sikenderpur Metro Satio, Dundahera and Sector 56, said the DC.
“The night shelters can accommodate upto 10 people at a time. So, these cabins can provide shelter to 80 more homeless people this year,” said an official with the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram.
“In fact every shelter will have a caretaker, 10 sets of beds and a mobile toilet nearby. These cabins will be functional by next week,” he added.
“We have spent two nights in the cabins at Railway Station and are more comfortable than roadside hutments. We didn’t feel cold in the shelters,” said Ram Prakash and his fellow labours from Rajasthan.
