Almost three months after an Assistant Sub-Inspector was found dead inside the barracks of the Rohini (South) police station, the Crime Branch is still awaiting a forensic report to establish whether he committed suicide or was killed.
Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) told The Pioneer, “We are waiting for the report from the Forensic Science laboratory. Accordingly, action will be taken,”
On December 28, the body of Ramesh Kumar was found with a bullet wound in his chest. The inquest proceedings were being carried out by the Crime Branch. Police had found blood stains on the door and outside the room where the body was found. A medical board constituted to carry out the postmortem submitted its report a fortnight ago.
According to the report, there was a muzzle wound in his chest. An officer privy to the probe said they are awaiting the gun residue report to establish if he shot himself or was shot by someone else. “If the report finds gunpowder on his hand or the sleeves of his shirt, it would establish that he shot himself. If gun powder is not found, we will investigate further. The report will take at least a month,” said the officer.
The family of the deceased had claimed that he was killed. The officer, however, said they had not found any evidence to suggest someone entered the police station and killed him. “There were blood stains found outside the room but they might be there since someone might have tried to revive and help him. It is likely that person is posted in the police station and is not coming forward since he might be scared,” added the officer.
The officer said nearly 25 police personnel, who were at the police station on that day, were questioned but none of them said they heard a gunshot. Police are also probing the reason behind Kumar’s death. “There was no suicide note found. Neither was he facing any issue on the family front nor he was having problems on the professional front” he added.
