Three medical interns of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) sustained injuries after they were allegedly hit by a car driven by a doctor inside the college premises late on Sunday night. The accused identified as Dr Varun was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving causing injury. He was later released on bail.
A senior police officer said, “Out of the three persons, one claimed that she was dragged along for several metres before the car came to a halt.” The victims have been identified as Geetanjali, Mamata and Kusum.
According to the statement purportedly made by Geetanjali, the incident happened around 11.30 pm near the college’s Pathology

She told the police that a speeding car coming from behind hit them. “I was dragged along with the moving car for some distance before the doctor applied brakes,” she added.
The other doctors who were walking ahead rushed to the aid of the victims and took them to the lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital.
According to Geetanjali, Dr Varun visited them and apologised.
While Geetanjali’s treatment continued in the lNJP Hospital itself, the other two were later referred to another hospital. All three were subsequently discharged, said the police on Tuesday.
The police have booked the accused doctor under Sections 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 279 (rash and negligent driving) of the Indian Penal Code. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) MS Randhawa said the accused was arrested and later granted bail.
