Around 2,000 men have been fined by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) under its 'Operation Kali' for boarding the women's coach of the Delhi Metro. The force conducts operations to rein in male passengers who barge in "women only" coaches. The enforcement wing of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also conducts surprise checks to prevent males from barging into coaches reserved for women.
As per the information shared by the CISF, around 270 operations have been conducted this year from January till September and fined 1954 men, whereas the total number of men fined for boarding the women's coach in the whole last year is 2081 and around 365 operation kali was conducted.
"The special drive is named as operation Kali especially to represent the women and to provide safety and security to the woman passengers. Earlier, the force gave different titles to operations such as beeta and others. But now, Operation Kali is given to represent the woman passengers," said a CISF official.
Besides CISF, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also conducts frequent operations and special drives in order to provide safety to woman passengers travelling in the Delhi metro train. DMRC has fined a total number of 2278 men this year till August and the number is 2650 in 2017.
Delhi Metro imposes penalty of Rs 250 on the male passengers who unlawfully enter the coach reserved for women. After witnessing complaints from the passengers, the DMRC started the special drive in 2010 to create awareness and provide safety for the woman commuters.
"While some board women only coaches in hurry, there are many who enter these coaches deliberately. However, DMRC conducts frequent drives to catch the people who unlawfully enter the woman coach and the secondly, guards have been specifically instructed at the platforms to tell the male passengers to not use any of the doors of the women coach even for entering the train. Further, the Delhi Metro has displayed all the helpline numbers inside the coach. Women passengers can immediately call and can stop the train if there was an emergency. The DMRC staffs as well as the CISF personnel are always to help the women passengers," said a senior DMRC official.
