A 25-year-old woman was set on fire allegedly by her neighbour in North-West Delhi’s Mukundpur on Saturday after she turned down his marriage proposal and accused him of harassment.

The woman suffered 70 per cent burns and was initially admitted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital and later was referred to lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital in critical condition.

Police has arrested the neighbour, Abhishek, his brother Karan and their uncle, Vijay. A case under relevant IPC Sections was registered against them at the Bhalswa Dairy police station.

The woman’s brother alleged that on Saturday evening, his sister received a message from Abhishek on her mobile phone asking her to meet him at 11 pm and threatened to kill her if she failed to meet him.

“The woman showed the message to his brother who then met Abhishek and rebuked him. Abhishek apologised and said he will not harass her again,” said the officer.

The brother left for a nearby market later. Around 8.15 pm, he returned home and found Abhishek’s uncle, Vijay, arguing with his mother and verbally abusing her. When he protested, Vijay pushed his mother due to which she fell on the stairs. Vijay called Abhishek, Karan, and others and they

allegedly attacked the brother and his friend with blunt objects.

“Abhishek and Vijay then went to the woman’s room on the first floor and poured kerosene on her body and set her on fire. The two then fled the house,” the officer said.

Neighbours doused the fire and rushed her to the hospital.

Abhishek was allegedly in a relationship with the woman but her family members had disapproved it and had asked her not to meet him. The woman had also started avoiding Abhishek, though he often tried to convince her to continue their relationship and marry him, police added. Further probe into the matter is on.  fire allegedly by her neighbour in North-West Delhi’s Mukundpur on Saturday after she turned down his marriage proposal and accused him of harassment.
