Two days after a 26-year-old woman journalist was allegedly molested and beaten up by an unidentified man after she fought him for groping her while she was entering the ITO metro station on Monday night, the Delhi Police on Friday said that they have arrested the man. The man has been identified as Akhilesh.
Pankaj Singh, DCP (Metro) said, “The accused is a 25-year-old man. He works as a help at a tea stall and lives in a slum cluster near ITO. During interrogation, he confessed that he was drunk at the time of the incident. He further revealed that he molested another woman ten minutes after he molested the journalist,”
As reported earlier, the journalist, who works with a reputed English daily headquartered at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, said the incident took place when she was entering the ITO metro station from gate number 1. “While I was entering the station, a man walking behind touched me. When I shouted at him, he came and groped. I started screaming and hit him. For nearly two-and-a-half minutes, I kept screaming and fighting, no one came to help. He managed to escape.”
“I then went inside the metro station where I alerted the CISF personnel about the incient. They made me wait inside the control room within the station for two hours. It was only then that police from Yamuna Depot came and took my written statement.”
She said she was approached by senior police officers of the Delhi Police. Despite giving a written complaint, the woman claimed that the FIR was registered only later on Tuesday evening.
Police sources said in the aftermath of the incident, CCTV cameras were scanned and the two-and-a-half minute grab was seized where it was evident how the man had molested the journalist.
The officer said that to solve the sensational case of molestation at the ITO metro station, five teams of Metro Police interrogated over 5000 persons in the past days and traced him down. He will be produced in the court on Friday.
