In order to detect mosquito breeding at DTC bus depots, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (SDMC) public health department carried out a massive drive and found mosquitoes breeding at 23 out of 38 bus depots coming under the jurisdiction of the civic body.

A senior SDMC official said that the mosquito larvae were destroyed while insecticidal spraying was done by the staff. DTC employees were educated about the importance of prevention of water stagnation and the prevention of mosquito breeding, he said.

The depots where mosquitoes were found breeding were DTC cluster bus depot, Sector-2, Sector-22, Sector-C, Dwarka, Sukhdev Vihar, Khanpur, Vasant Vihar, Dichaou Kalan, etc, he added.

The public health department also distributed handbills, displayed banners, pasted stickers and used mega-mikes to create awareness among the staff working in DTC bus depots and neighbouring colonies. The motive behind this was to make them aware of vector-borne diseases.

The department also initiated legal measures against caretakers/managers by issuing 20 legal notices and one challan against them, he said, adding that all the DHOs were directed to coordinate with caretakers/managers of bus depots and workshops for taking anti-mosquito measures in the premises. In case of failure, the SDMC will intensify the legal measures against the errant owners.

Delhi has reported127 dengue cases so far, according to a SDMC report released on Monday.

According to the report 62 cases of malaria and nearly 25 cases of chikungunya have also been reported till August 14 this year. Malaria, dengue and chikungunya are accompanied with high fever and therefore, doctors feel that people might suspect that they have contracted Covid-19.
