A 54-year-old Delhi Police Head Constable was mowed down by a speeding car allegedly driven by a young driver, who did not have a driving licence, near Welcome T-point in North East Delhi on Sunday morning, said police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) AK Singla said the incident took place around 8-30 am when the deceased Naresh Pal Malik was on his way to work on his scooter. The Ghazaiabad resident had reached near Welcome metro station when the car being driven by 18-year-old Shubham hit him from the back and he lost his balance falling on the road.

locals rushed to the spot and reported the matter to police.

Malik was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where he was declared brought dead, said police, adding that the victim had sustained severe head injuries.

Eyewitnesses chased down the accused, caught and handed him to police. Also sitting in the car was the owner of the vehicle, the father of one of Shubham’s friends, said Singla.

“We have booked Shubham for causing death by negligence and rash and negligent driving. He also disclosed that he turned 18 recently and does not have a licence issued yet. We have also booked his co-passenger for allowing a minor to drive,” said Singla, adding that prima facie it does not make for a culpable homicide (not amounting to murder) as we have seen in certain fatal accidents this year.

The Head Constable was a resident of Surya Vihar in Ghaziabad and has been a part of Delhi Police since 1982. He was currently posted at the Special Branch.
