Cashing in on water ATMs

Published on:

Delhi lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday inspected the progress of work on water ATMs that are being set up in Dwarka, based on RO treatment technology. These ATMs being set up at Dwarka will supply water to Sahyog Vihar, a resettlement colony, and is expected to cater to a population of about 20,000 people.

This is part of the project to set up 500 water ATMs all across the city, much on the lines of Sawda Ghewra. These water ATMs operate as cashless vending machine, through rechargeable smartcards. Jung also inspected the Interceptor Sewer Project undertaken by Delhi Jal Board which is aimed at improving the quality of water flowing into the Yamuna, by commissioning wastewater intercepting sewer in a 59 km length along the three major drains in the city, namely, Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahdara. The project involves interception of sewage flowing in around 180 subsidiary small drains and conveying it to the nearest sewage treatment plants (STPs) to ensure that only treated sewage is discharged into major drains. This would ensure that approximately 70 per cent pollution load going into the river Yamuna is prevented.
