Walk for spreading cancer awareness
Hundreds of volunteers thronged an awareness drive on the rampant gynaecological cancers among women on Monday. The drive, organised by BlK Super Speciality Hospital, Pusa Road, in collaboration with the Association of Gynaecologic Oncologists of India (AGOI) saw volunteers participating in Globeathon — The Walk to End Women’s Cancers, which began at 7 am at Birla Mandir near Gole Market and concluded with a closing ceremony at the Hospital. The cause has been supported by AGOI in five cities across India — Delhi, Bangalore, Cuttack, Patna and Jammu. Cancer has become a serious public health issue. Cancers of the female reproductive tract — cervix uteri, corpus uteri and ovaries along with breast form 50-60 per cent of all cancers among women in India. Furthermore, cancer registries have also highlighted that more than 70 per cent of cancers in women occur in the age group of 35-64 and that these cancers exercise an adverse influence on the productive role of women in society.
