2 men to be rewarded for displaying 'presence of mind' in nabbing thief

A 22-year-old alleged robber was nabbed by two youths, including the victim who had moments ago been forced to part with Rs10,000, at West Delhi’s Nangloi area. The arrival of a policeman at the crime spot within seconds of the crime helped in the arrest of the accused as his two associates chose to flee instead of rescuing him.

The victim Rajesh lost Rs1,500 in the scuffle while the rest of the robbed cash was recovered in a tattered state. The loss, however, is being made up for as police have claimed that Rajesh and another youth Rahul, both involved in nabbing the robber, would be paid Rs2,500 each for displaying “presence of mind, courage, high sense of commitment” in catching the robber.

The alleged robbery took place on Friday evening when Rajesh, 27, was near Vishal Mega Mart in West Delhi’s Nangloi for shopping. Suddenly, three men arrived on a motorcycle and two of them got off it.

“One of them pushed Rajesh from behind. Just as he was demanding an explanation for his behaviour, the man caught him from behind while his accomplice pulled out Rs10,000 from his pocket,” said a senior police officer. Rajesh called out for help even as he tried to catch hold of the one who had snatched his money. He found help from another youth Rahul who held on to the culprit. Even as the other two accomplices tried to free the one in trouble due to which a scuffle ensued, they saw a policeman approach the scene. The head constable, also named Rajesh, rushed to their help immediately and also informed the police control room. Police said this forced the other two robbers to flee from the spot.

The nabbed culprit was identified as Suraj. Police alleged he was wanted for several cases of robberies in the recent past.
