Two men allegedly posing as officials of the power discom BSES have been caught for demanding Rs 5 lakh from a power consumer in South-East Delhi’s Tughlakabad Extension.
Police said a group of 4-5 men posing as BSES enforcement team officials had demanded Rs 5 lakh from BSES consumer Narendra Kumar in Tughlakabad Extension on August 21.
On the pretext of checking the meter, they tried to harass him and demanded Rs 5 lakh for meter tampering.
The imposters also conducted a videography to impress Kumar and charged him with power theft. They managed to allegedly manage to extract Rs 12,000 from him, said a police officer.
However, a shopkeeper in the neighbour suspected the fake BSES men. He alerted Kumar after which two of the alleged imposters Sonu Kumar and Dhan Singh were caught by them. Four other associates of the duo managed to flee.
The accused were handed over to police and a case was registered at Govindpuri police station on the complaint of Kumar.
The BSES officials said in the last few months seven people posing as employees of the discom and trying to extort money from power consumers, have been caught in past few months.
A similar matter was reported from Dilshad Colony recently where imposters posing as BSES officials tried to extort money from a consumer but managed to escape when he became suspicious about them.
In the last two years, over 30 such impostors have been apprehended, said a BSES spokesperson.
“We appeal to our consumers not to get intimidated by threats or induced by false assurances and refrain from giving money to anyone. All fines and penalties and commercial payments are to be made only at designated BSES offices,” he said.
