Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested two persons, who work in pest control, for allegedly trying to extort from a businessman and threatening to kill his son “if he doesn’t pay Rs 25 lakh.”

According to the senior Crime Branch officials, the accused, identified as Sanjeev Duggal (51) and Shamrul Haq (65) were arrested from Shivam Enclave area in Vivek Vihar, police said on Sunday.

Police said that the case came to light on December 2 when the complainant, lalit Grover reported about receiving extortion calls wherein the accused were demanding Rs 25 lakh and threatening him. “He was told that if he failed to pay the amount, his son will be murdered.”

“The accused had asked the complainant to stuff the money into two teddy bears and place them on a rickshaw at Sanjay Enclave area, where the police had already reached. The police nabbed the accused while they tried to draw the money out,” said an official.

A senior official said that Duggal had worked in the complainant’s house some time back. The accused came to know about the victim’s financial condition while working at his place. “The accused had figured out about the finances of Grover..taking that in consideration the accused planned to extort money from him.”

“Duggal has been running his own business of pest control but he blamed demonetisation for pushing him to indulge into this crime,” the police said.
