It seems women from the North Eastern States are still being victimised in the national Capital. In yet another insensitive incident, a 24-year-old Manipuri student was molested and her cousin beaten by two youths on Friday evening in Old Gupta Colony of Model Town. Police identified the two accused as Kamal and Manpreet. They have been apprehended.

According to police, the B.Ed student and her cousin were returning to her paying guest accommodation in the area. No sooner they reached a park in the colony, the accused made a racist slur. The victims were also jeered at and mocked. later, the accused accosted her and started to grope her. Police said the accused tried flashing at the woman. Seeing this, the victim’s cousin — pursuing his Bachelors in Delhi University — interjected but was assaulted.

“A PCR call was made around 10.50 pm. A case under Sections 354A, 354B, 341 and 323 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 3 of the Prevention of Atrocities Act was registered at Model Town police station,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) N Gnana Sambandan. Following the incident, various North-East student wings protested at the site of the incident and assailed police vehicles with stones. The  students alleged that suchincidents continue to take place with little or no action from police.

“We dialled the North-East helpline but it’s ineffective. Police restored to lathicharge on innocent students because of some trouble-mongers,” rued Athot, member, Tangkhul Student Union. Around 20 vehicles were damaged and more than a dozen police officials were injured. A separate case of rioting and obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duties under Sections 147, 148, 149, 186 and 353 of IPC has been registered.
