Two doctors, including the Medical Officer of the Delhi Government-run Maharishi Valmiki Hospital, were killed after their scooty was hit by a speeding truck near Sector-3 of the Bawana Industrial area on Thursday night.

According to the senior police officer of the Rohini district, the accident took place at around 9 pm when 29-year-old Junior Resident Doctor Dr Gufran Alam and 34-year-old Medical Officer Dr Rajesh Rajput were heading back to the hospital after having dinner.

Dr Gufran Alam was working in the neurology department.

However, police said that in the absence of CCTV footage and eyewitnesses, they are unable to piece together the exact sequence of events. “We are still trying to establish how the scooty was hit. In the preliminary investigation, we suspect that the side lights of the truck were not working and that the scooty was hit by a third vehicle,” said a senior police officer.

The senior police officer said, “The two doctors were returning on their scooty. They had left the hostel of the hospital and gone out to eat. When the duo reached near the Bengali Chowk of the Bawana Industrial area, their scooty was hit by a truck. Following which, the driver of the truck fled from the spot, leaving behind the truck.

Some time passed, it was only when locals passing by saw the two doctors lying in a pool of blood that they made a call to the Police Control Room. By the time the two doctors were rushed to the Maharishi Valmiki hospital, Dr Gufran Alam was declared brought dead.

As condition of Dr Rajput was critical, he was referred to the Max Hospital where he too succumbed to injuries in the early hours of Friday.

Police said that they have registered a case under relevant Sections of the IPC at the Bawana Police Station.

Relatives of the two doctors who had gathered outside the mortuary of the Valmiki Hospital shared that Dr Rajesh Rajput, a native of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, has been working as the Medical Officer for the past four years.

On the other hand, Dr Gufran Alam, a native of Bihar, has recently joined the hospital. Prior joining the Maharishi Valmiki Hospital, he worked in the GB Pant and lok Nayak Hospital.

Colleagues of Dr Alam claimed that he wanted to clear the UPSC exam. “For the past-two-years, Dr Alam has been giving the entrances yet he could not clear the interview. In a bid to prepare better for the UPSC entrances, Dr Alam had joined the Maharishi Valmiki Hospital.”
