A 30-year-old woman, pilot with a private airline, was seriously injured after an SUV crashed into the cab she was travelling in towards the Delhi airport early on Sunday morning.
The cab driver and the security guard accompanying the pilot died on the spot in the collision that took place in an underpass on Golf Course road located in the upscale DlF phase-1 area in Gurugram.
According to the police, at around 5.30 in the morning, the Swift Dzire had just entered the underpass when a Scorpio came from the wrong direction and hit the car with great force.
In the collision, the pilot, Suvarna Sripalli Gayatri a resident of Gurugram Sector-61, was seriously injured while the cab driver and guard died on the spot.
The cab driver has been identified as Vinod Kumar Yadav a resident of Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and the guard was identified as Kishore ,a resident of Bareilly in UP.
The collision was so fierce that driver and security guard and driver died on the spot despite the airbags of both of the vehicles opening due to the impact. The front part of the white Swift Dzire was badly mangled after the crash.
The Scorpio driver abandoned his vehicle and fled the spot. He has not been arrested yet. Police suspect that the Scorpio driver may have been coming from the wrong way in the underpass.
“We heard a loud boom and it sounded like an explosion. We weren't sure what it was and we went to the accident spot. We figured there was a lot of speed involved in this crash. It was really terrifying and it was sad to see it,” an eyewitness said.
The pilot Suvarna Sripalli Gayatri was rushed to the Medanta hospital in sector-38 and is stated to be in a critical condition. The woman has severe injuries on her chest and face.
Police said the Scorpio has a Delhi registration under the name of one Pradeep Kumar but it yet to be verified and that there was a forged sticker of lok Sabha MP on it.
“A case of rash driving under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at DlF Phase-1 police station and hunts are on to nab the absconding driver,” Ravinder Kumar, the spokesperson of Gurugram Police, said.
