As communal clashes between the two groups broke out in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area, Delhi Police took strong action against those who made fake calls about violence and bloodshed to misguide the police.

The Police Control Room (PCR) received around 505 calls about riots and chaos in various areas. Some callers also informed that the people were trying to set the women in their houses on fire. There was

suddenly huge influx of calls, however, later it was revealed that around 192 calls were hoax, made by sadists to keep police on its toes.

In a sensitive situation like this, such calls by people only increase the tension and a wrong message is circulated, said a senior police officers, adding that “around 12 people were arrested under Section 505 (with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of IPC for making hoax calls. We are also trying to examine other calls and nab the accused persons,” said a senior police officer.

Residents have also taken to social fora to make others aware about the situation, asking them to join in. There are some residents who are posting old videos and misinforming the public that the violence is still on. The police officials are also checking on such elements and they would be apprehended for spreading rumours. The police requested the people not to spread wrong information and maintain peace and harmony in the area.

“Such actions by people are only provoking the residents. Technology is meant for use, not to abuse,” added the officer.
