The Delhi Government on Thursday approved a proposal of Rs 641.55 crore for the construction of Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka Sector 9. The proposal was conceptualised in 1994-95, but could not take off. According to Cabinet proposal, the hospital would come up over an area of 15 acres and would have a built-up area of 1,28,119 sq m, with groundfloor plus nine floors and two basements.
The hospital is targeted to be commissioned within three years. It would provide round-the-clock emergency services, maternity services, surgical facilities, OPD, general ward block, air-conditioned special ward block, full super-specialty services and teaching facilities.
The hospital would be developed as per green building concept. The teaching section would have an in-take capacity of 150 admissions per year (as per Medical Council India norms). In order to expedite its completion, the construction would be taken up on turn-key basis. 700-bed teaching hospital would be developed as a Centre of Advanced Health Care.
The Cabinet proposal states that the DDA had allotted 15 acres of land to the Health Department to set up a 500-bed hospital at Sector 9, Dwarka in 1994. M/s Jasbir Sawhney was appointed by the Public Works Department (PWD) as an architect in 1997. They submitted the preliminary drawings in 2000. The Floor Area Ratio (FAR) was increased to 200 and ground coverage to 30 per cent by the Urban Development Ministry.
After the meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit stated that the Health Department would keep a close eye on the construction of the hospital and would monitor its progress on regular basis to ensure its completion at the earliest as the area is not yet covered by any other Government hospital. Currently, Delhi has 2.55 hospital beds per 1,000 people, as compared to the WHO norms of 5 beds per 1,000 people.
