As Yamuna swelled enormously on Wednesday, the Railways was forced to regulate train operations on the 150-year-old iron bridge connecting Old Delhi Railway Station to Shahadara on the Delhi-Howrah route.
The bridge was closed around noon for all trains barring a few locals serving satellite towns. According to Northern Railways, these would run on the bridge at restricted speed.
Four trains were cancelled on Wednesday while movement of around 150 east-bound trains was affected. A majority were diverted through New Delhi and Nizamuddin railway stations while others were short-terminated at different stations in the city. The bridge will remain out of service till water recedes in Yamuna. Around 150 long-distance mail and express trains operate via Old Delhi Railway Station and invariably use this iron bridge.
