As the row over the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) finally comes to an end, deliberations to invoke the earlier prevalent three-year undergraduate programme have already begun.

The Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University Dinesh Singh has formed a committee of 14 principals of DU colleges in order to chalk out a detailed plan to begin the admissions at the earliest. The committee will devise the modalities of the admission process and advise and monitor all admission-related issues.

The Principals Association of the university was in the middle of a meeting when DU sent in its compliance to the UGC. Thus, the meeting was then continued with the V-C who instituted a committee to expedite the process.

Sources said several minute details need to be taken care of while revoking FYUP. These details include the re-establishment of the BA, BSc and BCom programme which were scrapped last year. Additionally, issues regarding new programmes which came in with FYUP, like Bachelors in Management Studies (BMS) and BTech courses, need to be addressed as well. As per sources, BTech courses are likely to become BSc Honours and BMS will be segregated into three Honours courses.

The committee has been formed to do the ground work on these matters, said the principal of a DU college. “The committee will look into the restoration process. The committee will devise a method to smoothly migrate into the three-year programme and then prepare a report. The report will first be seen by the Dean of Academics. A draft will be prepared thereafter which will be sent to the Academic Council (AC) for ratification,” he added.

While this is a long process and will require a lot of time to execute, the admissions don’t need to be put on hold. Another principal who didn’t want to be named said, “The first and foremost step of the university should be to have the three year UG course ratified in the AC and Executive Council. Once that is done, the Dean Students’ Welfare along with principals should notify a common schedule for the release of cut-offs to colleges. This is of utmost importance as admissions need to start and the working out of modalities will take time. Modalities need to be chalked out before the session starts.”

According to sources, the AC meeting has been scheduled for 10 am and EC meeting for 11.30 am on Saturday. This means that the cutoffs could come out by Monday.
