12th Auto Expo revs up 1 lakh enthusiasts

Huge turnout of visitors to 12th Auto Expo, which started in Greater Noida on Monday, caused traffic snarls in Noida throughout the day on key arterial roads. The DND flyway, road between Noida Gate and Mahamaya flyover, Noida-Greater Noida express highway, Pari Chowk area, Yamuna Expressway and expo mart area have been witnessing large volume of vehicles during peak hours as over 1 lakh visitors are reaching the auto expo daily since Friday.

However, the Noida Traffic Police has said even though traffic movement is slow, no significant gridlock has been reported from any location. During evening hours, unmanageable rush was seen near Film City area in Noida. Jams were witnessed due to the narrow loop leading into DND flyway. Since this loop is only two-lane and a four-lane traffic funnel onto the loop, a bottleneck was created. By

6 pm, Noida-Greater Noida carriageway up to the Noida entry gate was clogged with traffic. “While this is an everyday occurrence, no major traffic holdup was witnessed,’ said Suneeta Singh, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) of Noida. According to the Traffic Police, the cause of the occasional jam was an “overwhelming” rush of auto enthusiasts after the expo was thrown open to the general public after 1 pm. Cops have also advised commuters to use an alternate route between Greater Noida and Noida. Traffic Police have challaned more than 2,000 errant drivers while around 1,000 vehicles have been towed away since Friday.

Traffic Police is also using the public address system near the expo venue advising people not to leave their vehicles parked wrongly. Over 150 Traffic personnel have been deployed in the vicinity of expo mart to guide motorists and to stop illegal parking on roads towards the venue. “Motorists can use the Dadri-Surajpur-Chalera road to avoid traffic congestion. This way the pressure will also be eased on the Noida-Greater Noida express highway,” said a traffic police official.
