A 12-year-old girl was raped and murdered at her home in North-East Delhi’s New Usmanpur area on Tuesday evening. The girl's mother spotted her lying in a semi-nude condition on the floor of the house. Police said that they have detained three persons, including landlord Mohammed Akil and his son in connection with the case.

After the incident, angry local residents gathered outside the police station and staged a protest against police. Heavy police presence was deployed in the locality as tension prevailed till Wednesday night. The victim’s mother, who works in Daryaganj to feed the family, returned home on Tuesday around 8 pm when she saw her daughter lying in a pool of blood in semi-nude condition in their room. She immediately raised an alarm and neighbours rushed the girl to nearby Jagpravesh Chandra Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

Prima facie it appeared she was strangled to death after gang-rape. Police said they have registered a case of rape and murder at the local police station and further probe is on.  Police said that when the victim’s mother reached home she found the main door locked from inside. “She then went inside from another door which opens into another tenant’s room, who is outside Delhi with his family for the past few days,” said the investigating officials, adding, “This door usually remained close even as the landlord and his son were well versed with it.” The victim is survived by two sisters, who recently got married and three brothers who also stayed separately with their wives.
