'12 DU colleges funded by Govt to come under Ambedkar varsity soon'

Published on:

Four months after the Delhi Government had freezed all appointments in 28 colleges funded by it, senior officials in Delhi University on Wednesday said that 12 colleges, fully funded by Delhi Government, will soon be part of Ambedkar University in Delhi. On the other hand, the officials said that the Delhi University will take over those colleges which are partially-funded by the Delhi Government. “University is in the position to fund those colleges which are partially funded by city Governemnt,” said a DU official.

The 12 colleges, which are fully-funded by the Delhi Government include Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Science, Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, Shaheed Raj Guru College , Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Acharya Narendra Dev College, Bhagini Nivedita College, Keshav Maha Vidyalaya, Maharaja Agrasen College, Aditi Mahavidyalaya, Mahirishi Balmiki College of Education and Bhaskara Charya College of Applied Science.

The officials said that Delhi Government’s interference in the appointments of principals and teachers is affecting the academic standards of the colleges. “The Delhi University is an autonomous institution. The involvement of the Delhi Government in the appointment is not appropriate at the stage when new session has been started,” added the official.

Airing the similar view, former DUTA president Adiya Narayan Mishra said, “The Delhi Government’s involvement in administration of DU colleges will lead to the separations, which will not only harm the brand name of the university but also affect the quality of education.”

“University will be split in such scenario. The localisation of knowledge will harm in future,” said Mishra.

The 16 colleges, which are partially-funded by the Delhi University, are Shivaji College, Motilal Nehru College, laxmi Bai College, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Maiteryi College, SPM College for Women, Satyawati College, Vivekanand College, Rajdhani College , Kamla Nehru College, Gargi College, Swami Shardhanand College, Kalindi College, Bharti College, Sri Aurbindo College and Delhi College of Arts and Commerce.

Earlier in April, the Directorate of Higher Education (DHE), Delhi Government had written a letter to the colleges of Delhi Government saying not to appoint regular teachers till the Government nominates the members of the Governing Body.

At present, over 20,000 students are studying in these 28 Delhi Government-funded colleges. Earlier, there were apprehensions that the Delhi Government will set up a separate university by taking over 12 DU colleges, fully-funded by it.

On June 22, the Delhi Government Cabinet had passed the resolution to upgrade the Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT) at the State University level. NSIT, was part of the Delhi University earlier, is presently an autonomous institute of Government of Delhi.
