100-year-old Chandni Chowk building caves in

A 100-year-old three-storey building collapsed in Chandni Chowk on Saturday. The structure was declared unsafe and had been vacated hours before the collapse, thus, no causalities were reported.

According to police, a PCR call about the collapse was received around 1 am. Senior police officials claimed that they had already intimated the Municipal Corporation about the "dangerous" condition of the building, but the Corporation still did not take any action. "The building was vacated on Saturday evening, hours before the incident. Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot. No causality took place," said a senior police official.

According to locals, two side walls of the building had tilted a few days back and residents had also complained about the crumbling condition of the building to the Municipal Corporation, which did not initiate any action. The residents also stated that the ongoing construction on the top floor of the building put pressure on the already-crumbling structure. The police have registered a case at the Kotwali Police station, against unknown persons.
