An engineer employed at a BPO was charred to death and his two colleagues critically injured when the car they were travelling in had a fender-bender on Noida-Greater Noida Express Highway on Wednesday night.

According to police, Vineet Kumar (25) — along with Rajkumar (24) and Harshit (25) — was headed towards Sector 105 when the mishap occurred. The victims were admitted to JJ Hospital where Vineet was declared brought dead on arrival while the condition of the other two is stated to be critical.

Police said the accident took place around 11 pm when the three men were coming from Sector 95 on the Expressway. A speeding truck rammed into their car from the rear near Sector 82. Rajkumar, who was behind the wheel, lost control of his vehicle. He hit a divider and an electric panel on a pole.

The electric panel burst into flames. Even as tongues of flames spread to the car, the truck driver took to his heels. Vineet hailed from Orissa while Rajkumar and Harshit are residents of Uttar Pradesh. An eyewitness rescued Rajkumar and Harshit by breaking the car’s window shield. “When I saw flames, I rushed to the spot. I managed to rescue the victims who had suffered serious burns,” said Rahisuddin.

“We have registered a case against the errant truck driver at Sector 39 police station and are investigating the matter. We have sent the body for post-mortem and informed the next of kin,” said a senior police official.
