US commemorates 50th anniversary of King's 'dream'

S Rajagopalan

As the US commemorated 50th anniversary of the famous March on Washington, led by Martin luther King with his evocative “I have a dream” speech, President Obama lauded the nation’s great progress towards racial equality, but stressed that creation of economic opportunity for millions of Americans remains “our great unfinished business”.

Addressing thousands from same lincoln Memorial venue, Obama said, “The test wasn’t, and never has been, whether the doors of opportunity are cracked a bit wider for a few. It was whether our economic system provides a fair shot for the many — for the black custodian and the white steelworker, the immigrant dishwasher and the Native American veteran.”
