It was a Vedic style wedding for Tulsi Gabbard, the first-ever Hindu lawmaker in US Congress. The 33-year-old Congresswoman from Hawaii married Abraham Williams, a 26-year-old cinematographer, in a traditional Vedic ceremony in Windward Oahu on Thursday. The ceremony took place at the Pohai Ke Aloha Pavilion and Garden at the historic Kahaluu Fishpond, concluding with a traditional yoga kirtan with friends and family celebrating the newly married couple with song and dance, Hawaii’s KHON2 TV network reported.

Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran for whom it is a second marriage, met Williams when he worked on her Congressional campaign. “A little over a year ago, when he first asked me out, we had a chance to just talk story, hang out, chill out for a little bit. What I saw was somebody who is not only my friend, but somebody who is genuinely kind and a good person who every day I see him put other people before himself,” Gabbard had told the TV network.

“He’s my best friend, my surfing buddy and my partner in everything. We’re both thrilled to celebrate this new chapter — beginning our lives together,” Gabbard said in an interview to People magazine.
