Hyderabad: A Democratic wave has swept across the United States, handing the party control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections and dealing a major blow to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
According to the Associated Press, Democrats have secured control of the House of Representatives, crossing the 218-seat majority threshold, and flipped at least seven Republican-held Senate seats to seize the upper chamber.
The results mark a dramatic shift in Washington's political balance, setting the stage for a divided government during the remaining two years of Trump's presidency.
Democrats registered major Senate victories in Texas, Ohio, Kansas, South Carolina, Iowa, Maine and North Carolina, breaking longstanding Republican dominance in several states.
While counting continues in some races, Democratic control of Congress will give the opposition greater power to challenge Trump's legislative agenda, scrutinise his administration and block key policy proposals.
Trump, meanwhile, signalled his willingness to accept the results.
“I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” he told The New York Times, adding that he looked forward to working with Democrats.
However, Trump blamed Republican losses on his absence from the ballot, claiming his party would have won by a landslide had he contested.
Indian-American Democrats Ami Bera and Suhas Subramanyam secured re-election to the House from California and Virginia, respectively. Bera won his eighth term, defeating Republican Robb Tucker.
Aruna Miller retained Maryland's lieutenant governorship, while Pia Dandiya won Florida's 22nd Congressional District.
Meanwhile, Trump-backed Republican Saritha Komatireddy conceded defeat to incumbent Democrat Letitia James in New York's attorney general race.
Republican Vivek Ramaswamy also lost Ohio's gubernatorial contest to Democrat Amy Acton.
