The Obama administration has studiously refrained from commenting on AAP’s stunning victory and BJP’s shocking debacle in the Delhi Assembly elections, terming it “an internal matter for the people and the Government of India”.
State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki, when asked by a reporter to comment on the Delhi elections since it took place soon after President Barack Obama’s visit, said: “I’d first refer you to the Government of India for information about the elections. That is an internal matter for the people and the Government of India.”
The influential New York Times, however, came up with an editorial on the subject, acidly commenting that the Delhi results have brought Prime Minister Modi “down to earth” and noting that the outcome would only add to the “enormous pressure” on him to deliver on election promises, besides emboldening rival political parties.
