A renowned jewellery brand has installed a technology in its products which enables a woman to trigger an alarm if she thinks she is in danger. Companies across the city are using the benefits of technology and compressing them into something a person can easily wear. Team Viva finds out about this rising trend
At a time when wearing your precious stones has become next to impossible on a busy road, what if we tell you that now, you can not only flaunt your stunning pieces of jewellery but can also use them to trigger an SOS alarmIJ It may come as a surprise to many that jewellery designers have gone a step ahead not only in terms of enhancing the beauty of a woman but are also ensuring that they remain safe at all times.
For example a prominent tech firm has partnered with India’s leading silver jewellery brand to create a line of jewellery which a woman can use both for style and also as a defense mechanism. Chiraag Kapil from the tech firm explained, “With the evolution in technology and fashion space, we realised that fashion is taking the face of technology and evolving as the new fashion-technology wearable. Wearable technology can also be successful when technology empowers existing wearables and not create additional wearables for a person to wear. Our aim was to make women safer and hence jewellery came naturally in this concept. We developed the technology called Safer and partnered with the brand to bring a product that is accepted by the women. The intersection of design and technology further empowers the women and eliminate the reluctance of not wearing it.”
Haushang Arora from the leading jewellery brand explained to us how the device works. It works on bluetooth low energy technology and has a rechargeable battery within 15 minutes and a battery life of around 10 days. It communicates with the user’s smartphone via safer app. “Safety is one function that requires immediate reaction and alert. There are a lot of apps that serve the alert functionality but in times of emergency, you do not have the time to take your mobile phone out of your pocket/bag, enter the passcode, open the app and then send an alert. So, we needed a handy solution to this, then, we came up with the idea of introducing safety feature in the Safer Smart Jewellery which enables you to press the device on jewellery which you are wearing right there. Wearables is the next big thing in safety technology and I believe we are bang on time,” he said and added, “The device goes inside the jewellery and gets connected via app. Press the device twice and it sends an instant alert to five guardians in your app along with your real time location through google maps and they can live track you to get the required help. It also lets you set custom phone notifications (safer beeps to inform you when people who matter try to get in touch with you) right onto your jewellery. It also has some other features like selfies and safer walk, where people can virtually walk with you at odd hours.”
Well, this is one side of the wonders that technology can do your wonderful collection. The other, and possibly an even better development in technology, is the introduction of 3D technology. 3D technology has been in the country for some time but to use it to create pieces of jewellery is something very few companies have thought of. A leading jewellery portal, for example, uses advanced 3D technology to design their products before manufacturing them. Arvind Singhal, chief operating officer from the portal told us that they use machines from Germany called Rapid which help to create accurate and detailed 3D structures of a product. He said, “It is the right technology to get into right now. We use this in design presentation and in the manufacturing side. What happens in design presentation is that when you see the product in the website, you do not see it just from one side, you see it in 3D. However, on the manufacturing side, during the product development, a 3D resin model of the product is made before we give the design for actual product manufacturing,” said Singhal, pointing out to the company’s collection titled lattice and Alpha.
Wearable technology is here is to stay and with new developments everyday, we can safely say that there will be more exciting and innovative products in the future that are sure to leave us surprised.
