Har Ki Dun
One has to be physically fit for this stretch. The Har Ki Dun, also called the hanging valley of the gods, is one of the popular treks of the Garhwal Himalayas. It is located at the base of the Fateh Parvat, at an elevation of 3,556 mts. This is a moderate trek of medium difficulty and one can start their journey from Dehradun. And in case you are interested in glaciers, trek five kilometres to reach the Jaundhar Glacier, which is at a level of 4,300 metres. The Doon valley is surrounded by dense forest and is considered a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers.
Chopta, Deoriatal and Chandrashila peak climb
If you are looking for a short trekking trip then this is the place to go. Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, it is considered a route apt for first time trekkers. At the top of the Chandrashila hills is situated the highest and ancient Shiva temple of Tungnath. On a clear day, one can get to see a full view of peaks like Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi and Trishul.
Kuari Pass
The Kuari Pass-Pangarchulla trek is a moderate one. It takes one through the gorgeous meadows of Gorson, through forests of oak, chestnut and rhododendron and up the Kuari Pass. From Kuari Pass, one can view some of the prominent mountain peaks like Nilkanth (6,596 mt), Narayan Parbat (5,965 mt), Mana peak (7,272 mt), Kamet (7,756 mt), Abi Gamin (7,355 mt), Ghori Parbat (6,708 mt), Hathi Parbat (6,727 mt) and Dronagiri (7,066 mt).
Roopkund
This place has everything an adventurer can seek for — deep virgin forests, gurgling brooks, breath-taking campsites and miles of undulating meadows, snow and ice. What’s more, its popularity comes from the mysterious stories surrounding the Roopkund lake and the numerous bones and skeleton remains that can be found in the water. One can start the trek from lohajung, a tiny pass, in the heart of the greater Himalayan range, 85 kms from Karanprayag and walk up to the lake. It lies in the remote parts of the Chamoli district in Garhwal.
Valley of Flowers
The place is a sea of flowers, quite literally. When the sun shines bright, flowers bloom in every colour one can imagine. Do not believe stories of trekkers falling unconscious because of the heavy scent of the flower bed. One can start the trek from Ghangria, which is at a distance of 10 kilometers from the valley.
A day’s trek involves an ascent of 3,000 meters and a descent of 3,500 meters. The valley is a World Heritage Site and a part of the Nanda Devi biosphere.
Nag tibba
This lesser-known trek trial near Mussoorie is considered as a trekkers delight owing to its snow-clad mountains and provisions for camping under starry night skies. It is the highest peak (9,915 ft) in the Nag Tibba range of the Garhwal Himalayas and is said to be the abode of the Nag devta. The trek will take one through dense forests, rich in flora and fauna.
Hampta pass
If one is a first time trekker then Hampta Pass is the ideal place. One can start the trek from the thick forest and then enter into open valleys with lush green covers of grass. One can then cross to Hampta Pass and enter the barren landscape of lahaul and Spiti to visit the Chandratal lake. Hampta Pass trek will take one over the majestic foothills of the Himalayas to the Pir Panjal range (14,100 feet).
