On his maiden Indian tour, DJ Mykris tells Darpan Mago about the beginning of his career in Spain, the EDM revolution in India and his love for classic tracks
Ever since the revolution in electronic dance music in the country, there have been many world renowned DJs who have come and rocked the floor. Even our own DJs are making most of the EDM craze. “The electronic music industry is growing fast and India has come up as a big destination for international artistes. The musical industry here is expanding and giving a wide array of choices to fans in India,” says Mykris, who is recently in India as part of the Ultra Music Festival. He performed at Club BW in Delhi and in Bengaluru. Mumbai is next on his list.
Mykris has been much acclaimed at some of the best clubs in the world, like Space Ibiza and Manison Miami and is also the resident DJ of the Ultra Music Festival. At present, Mykris has been touring in clubs and festivals throughout the world. He continues to delight and freak-out electronic music-lovers with mixing sessions that combine progressive house, electro house, tech house and house. Mykris informs, “My mixes are energetic. I also make my own versions of mashups. I love when I am playing with acapellas (music without musical instruments) and changing snare rolls or drops. I also take tracks from the new talents as well.”
He was born in Paris and has strong artistic roots. Mykris has spent his teenage years performing as a DJ and he bettered his art with each assignment. When he was just 15, he moved to Spain where he began playing music at various clubs.
Mykris recalls his early days and says, “Even as a kid I was always with my headphones on. I used to listen to music all the time. Music has always been a very important part of my life. When I was 15, one of my friends in north Spain was ill. He taught me some basic things about handling music equipment and I played the whole weekend in the small venue where he was working. The response that I received motivated me to be a DJ. My first salary was spent on books and magazines on deejaying. I also bought a lot of electronic music and searched for some rare tracks to become better in the field.” Constant creativity and experimentation form the base of EDM. “I can create music anywhere, anytime. Perhaps, if I have a melody in my head or an idea I try to go to the studio as soon as possible and do something with it.” Mykris works with old, classic tracks that everyone wants to hear again and again. “Every DJ has his own way of mixing. Music brings back memories to people. My influences are derived from house and dance music. I think that the 90s in electronic music was an unforgettable era.” Mykris feels that cities like las Vegas, Miami and Ibiza are the most preferred for EDM.
