Designer Mayyur R Girotra unveils his cutting edge cocktail line with Kalki Koechlin looking stunning as the showstopper. He shares with Arjita Mishra how he tried to recreate the magic of the 60s and 70s through his collection

These days, girls have become more experimental while choosing their cocktail dresses. Minis and gowns has become an outdated trend for the cocktails. Yes, now we are going to see a lot of Indian dresses at the cocktail parties too. There was a time when after hearing about a cocktail party, we used to arrange either minis or gowns, but now we will try to get lehengas and sarees for the cocktail parties as well.

In the cocktail party wear collection of fashion designer Mayyur Girotra, one could see a lot of Indian wear like sarees and lehengas being used.  “The lehengas and sarees are not the typical ones that we see in weddings. Instead, they are very funky and done with a minimal work,” said the designer. In his brand new collection titled Blingiton, Girotra tried to recreate the magic of 60s and 70s. He said, “The first round is full of sarees and it is very vintage. Chiffon and georgette sarees from 60s and 70s used to have big motifs and flowers, thus, I have tried to give a retro look to my collection.”

On asking about his inspiration for the collection, he said, “When I was a kid, I saw what my mother and grandmother used to wear and I have seen my grandmother’s picture also. She used to wear saree with sequins. So I always wanted to recreate that drama, that whole look.” His collection of sarees were effortlessly blending classic glamour with the new age sophistication which created an image of timeless style. He further added to it, “It is a mix of a lot of stuff from 15th and 16th century and I carried forward that period and you we will feel that vintage when you will look to that stuff.”

Actress Kalki Koechlin who was the showstopper for Girotra’s collection was in a structured floor length embellished black jacket and black narrow fitted pants. “I am glad that Mayyur managed to create a collection which one can wear over time even after ten years and it will still look fashioned. I think that is the sign of a good designer. The dress which I am wearing is something very classic, beautiful, something you can see on somebody of any age.” She added, “What’s nice about the dress is that it’s very simple yet elegant.”

The designer had used georgette and chiffon fabrics in his collection and he also used a new fabric called neoprene. “A lot of people  are making gowns in them but I did jackets as you can see it in what Kalki is wearing,” he said.

It took three months for him to complete the whole collection. “There are very neat cuts. I have not done a lot of shape and structuring,” said Girotra.

Girotra did not use any accessories for his collection but to give a retro look, he had given a different look to the models. “We had just played with the look - nude make up, dramatic eyes, red lips and the vintage hair do,” he said.

His collection started with whites going on to blacks. On asking what’s new in his collection, the designer said, “I feel that this is very new collection for me and every collection with which the designer comes, he/she feels that it is new. For me this is obviously something very fresh and new as before,” the designer concluded.
