lo and behold! The soon-to-follow fashion trends for spring/summer have been researched and declared. If you were wide and awake in your stylish best during the talk on Global Trends held by WGSN in association with Amazon, then you'd know what we are referring to.
Catriona Macnab, head of fashion at WGSN, discussed the key items for apparel and accessories for the spring/summer collections 2016. "With details of colours, fabrics, prints and styling that you need to know of," she began. Buyers from major retails and brands look into this for their critical decision-making.
With our notepads and pens out, the scribbling began when Macnab said, "let's talk about the macro trend that has been created two year ahead of the retail season."
First is line is called Past Modern with references to new way dressing of incorporating the old with soft tailoring and long languid slim silhouettes. "It creates a new contemporary feminine style. It has emerged as a look with sculpted shapes," she shared.
The next is called Deep Summer with oceanic blues and greens. "It is a starting point for the deep summer trend incorporating nature's strangely beautiful dark side. There is luxurious day to evening resort wear with vivid prints. You'll see tactile fabrics with metallic finishes. It includes light-weight fluid fabrics featuring lovely knitted mesh. There are maxi-like silhouettes with long-layered separates," Macnab said.
A youthful casual story with bright pastels and a soft playful vibe is what the Soft Pop trend is about. "A sense of softness is enhanced through experimental textures and colour usage. The core basic sport look has been given a new twist in the women's casual-wear market. Soft Pop continues the pastel palette which has enjoyed so much success throughout the world and across the seasons. We are looking at more grown-up looks with clean contemporary shapes. This is an important style for next summer," she emphasised.
The final story, she disclosed, was Eco Active. Bohemian looks will continue from previous seasons with fresh and invigorating look. Tribal contrasting prints and embellishment, the eclectic and vibrant looks infuse the style with texture and bright saturated colours mixed with deep natural tones.
We tool a look at how these trends have evolved the colour, fabric, styling for commercial looks.
Starting with colour, it seems the appetite for pastels continues and pink is the big for this season. The range and breadth of pink is far-reaching. From bright pop pinks to saturated candy pastels, these are ultra-sweet hues are also great for accessories and footwear.
Deep sea palette has commercial colours of turquoise, indigo and purple which can be great for beachwear. Sheers, silks, PVC et al. are relevant textiles to carry this palette.
Peach tones offer great fashion shade for the season.
Moving away from pristine white is parchment white which is an antique white. “The colour is important for layering, styling, and sheer layers. The shade has an undyed rustic natural look,” Macnab explained.
There are cosmetic neutrals, followed by baked earth and lava red.
