Nikasha Tawadey’s latest collection is inspired by the Coromandal coast during the colonial era
Fashion designers often have detailed accounts on how they were inspired to start designing. But Nikasha Tawadey has just two lines to share.
“A friend at a party complimented my top and I told her I had it made from an old mul mul dupatta. She placed a small order, and that’s how it all started. Designing was always a hobby and I often drew sketches, designed my dresses for weddings at home, but I never thought of becoming a designer. I believe that this came naturally to me, but my friends played a role in nourishing my talent,” said Nikasha, who presented her collections at the Wills India lifestyle Fashion Week as well and was complimented for her choice of colours and use of traditional prints like bandhani and gota work in her garments. Resort, evening and bridal styles are her specialties. She works with natural fabrics, intricate embroideries and focusses on detailing.
Inspired by the Coromandal coast during the colonial era, Nikasha’s latest collection is called Coromandal. It paints a vivid panorama of the South East coast of India.
The collection to mind white sandy beaches, lush banana plantations, changing hues of sea shells. Shades of white, biscuit, almond are central to this collection, in addition to the archived prints from the colonial period. Silhouettes are easy and with unique asymmetrical hems and panels. This is complimented with tobacco and gold sequined scarves and neck pieces.
“I make sure that every garment out of my factory makes the woman feel proud of what she is. My silhouettes are such that they compliment the choice of Indian women,” said Nikasha. After her marriage, Nikasha has shifted to Singapore but she keeps travelling to Delhi every 45 days.
